Moving with a disabled person to Orange County – all you need to know

Any type of relocation is complex and rarely completely relaxing. However, when you’re moving with a person with disabilities, there’s a lot more to handle. From finding accessible housing to ensuring that medical and support services are in place, there are many factors to think about. Orange County offers various resources for those with disabilities, making it a good option for families looking to settle in a supportive environment. To prepare better for moving with a disabled person to Orange County, take a look at these useful tips that will make your move as smooth as possible while ensuring that accessibility and comfort are top priorities.

Understanding Orange County’s accessibility

When moving with a disabled person to Orange County, you should know that this region has a range of accessibility features to support individuals with various mobility and health needs. The county is committed to providing accessible public spaces, transportation, and facilities. The goal is to help make life easier for those with disabilities. Preparing for a move also means ensuring that the area you’re moving to offers easy access to the resources and services that are needed.

Accessibility features you can expect in Orange County

The following features are designed to make a disabled person and their family’s life easier:

  • Public transportation: The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) provides ADA-compliant buses and paratransit services for individuals with disabilities. The ACCESS service is a door-to-door transportation option for those who can’t use regular buses.
  • Accessible parks and public spaces: Many parks, like Huntington Beach and Irvine’s Heritage Park, offer accessible pathways, restrooms, and facilities for individuals with disabilities.
  • Medical facilities: Orange County is home to top-notch hospitals and clinics that offer specialized care for people with disabilities.
  • Local businesses: Many restaurants, shops, and businesses are ADA-compliant, offering accessible entrances, seating, and restrooms.
  • Support services: Organizations and programs provide support, including in-home care and therapy, for disabled individuals.

With all this and a range of other services, such as packing services Orange County companies provide, you can ensure a smooth move while taking advantage of the accessibility features that the area offers.

Finding accessible housing in Orange County

Finding a home that meets accessibility needs is very important in this situation. Orange County has various options, but it’s important to know what to look for and where to find support.

ADA-compliant housing

Look for properties that are already ADA-compliant. This means they meet the standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act. These homes often feature ramps, wide doorways, and accessible bathrooms. If you’re unsure where to begin, many real estate websites allow you to filter properties based on accessibility features. Local housing organizations can also help identify suitable homes.

Modifying your home

If you find a property that isn’t fully accessible, modifications may be necessary. Simple changes like installing grab bars or adjusting door widths can make a big difference. There are also grants and financial assistance programs available for families looking to adapt their homes for disabled individuals. California’s Department of Rehabilitation can offer guidance on home modifications.

What to focus on when modifying your new home

Although there are countless ways to make your home more accessible, the following are essential:

  • Widen doorways. Standard doorways in many homes are often too narrow for wheelchairs or other mobility devices.
  • Install ramps. Stairs at the entrance or inside the home can be a major obstacle for people with mobility issues. Installing sturdy, non-slip ramps ensures safe and independent entry and movement.
  • Modify bathrooms. Bathrooms often need significant modifications to improve safety. Installing grab bars near the toilet and inside the shower or bathtub provides essential support for individuals with mobility challenges. Adding non-slip flooring reduces the risk of slips and falls, while roll-in showers without thresholds make it easier for wheelchair users or individuals with reduced mobility to bathe safely.
  • Lower countertops and light switches. Kitchens and bathrooms can be challenging for wheelchair users if countertops, sinks, and light switches are out of reach. Lowering these elements to a comfortable height ensures that daily tasks like cooking, cleaning, or turning on lights can be done independently. The ideal countertop height is usually between 28 to 34 inches, and light switches should be no higher than 48 inches from the floor.
  • Install stairlifts or elevators. For homes with multiple floors, stairlifts or small elevators provide a safe and practical solution for accessing different levels. Stairlifts can be fitted to existing staircases and allow users to sit comfortably while moving up or down. Elevators, though a larger investment, offer even more independence, especially in homes with narrow or winding staircases.

Focusing on these modifications and utilizing Orange County installation services can allow you to make sure the home is not only safe but also comfortable for the disabled individual.

Navigating educational options when moving with a disabled person to Orange County

When relocating with a disabled person, especially a child, ensuring access to proper education is one of the priorities. The OC region offers various options for special education services and accommodations for students with disabilities.

Inclusive schools and special education programs

Orange County has public schools with programs tailored to meet the needs of students with disabilities. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), schools are required to provide services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and personalized learning plans. Parents can work with schools to develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a 504 Plan to ensure the right support is in place.

Colleges and vocational training

For young adults with disabilities, the OC also offers accessible higher education options. Colleges like Orange Coast College and California State University, Fullerton provide disability support services, including assistive technology, academic accommodations, and physical accessibility across campuses. Vocational training programs are also available for individuals seeking career-focused skills.

Coordinating the move for a smooth transition

Apart from all this, it’s important to plan carefully so that educational resources are easily accessible after relocating. Grants for home modifications

For those moving into a home that needs to be modified for accessibility, there are grants available to help with the costs. Programs like the California Department of Rehabilitation offer financial support for home modifications, such as installing ramps, widening doorways, and adapting bathrooms to meet accessibility standards. Also, in case you need to discard some of your furniture or other belongings to make these changes, don’t despair. You can always use vaulted storage Orange County solutions.

Organizations like the Orange County Disability Collaborative host events, workshops, and social activities, offering families and disabled individuals a chance to meet others facing similar challenges. These groups also provide practical advice on navigating life with a disability in the area. For example, Orange County delivery service providers claim that many of their satisfied clients heard of their services through such groups. People simply like to help one another in such gatherings, and those who have a disability, or a family member who does need all the help they can get.

Planning and organizing each step of the process can help make the transition easier for everyone involved. While residential movers Orange County provides can handle the transportation of belongings, there are several other aspects to keep in mind.

  • Visit the new home beforehand. Ensure it is fully accessible and make note of any modifications that need to be completed before moving day.

  • Pack essential items separately. Items like mobility aids, personal care supplies, and important documents should be packed separately for easy access.

This company is the real deal! From the initial contact with Tyler who organized the move and was very communicative and available to answer any questions, to the day of, everything exceeded my expectations. Our crew consisted of Armando, Edwin and John who were all fantastic! They worked so hard solution seeking and navigating our new space (which has a very tight stairwell and is 3 stories) not to mention moving everything out of our old apartment which was also on the 3rd floor (no elevator). They wrapped our furniture and took great care handling all of our boxes and fragile pieces. Seriously, these are some of the hardest working guys I have ever seen and they had a great attitude the whole time! I highly recommend them and will be using them again for my next move. Worth every penny. Thanks again for the 5 star service!

I had an amazing experience with Affordable Reliable Moving and Storage during my recent move in Irvine. From start to finish, the team lived up to their name—affordable, reliable, and truly professional. They showed up on time, handled everything with care, and made what could’ve been a stressful day feel totally under control. The crew was friendly, efficient, and even managed to navigate my oddly shaped furniture through tight corners without a scratch. I was especially impressed by how organized they were—labeling everything, wrapping fragile items, and keeping things moving like a well-oiled machine. If you’re moving in the Irvine area (or anywhere nearby), I can’t recommend them enough. Five stars all the way!

This is our 2nd move with Affordable Reliable Moving, and they are absolutely fantastic. Today, we have Spencer, Luis, and Jesse -- they were ON TIME (a little early, in fact), super fast with the big item packing and moving, genuinely nice, and incredibly efficient. They provide wardrobe boxes, mattress covers, furniture packing, electronics (TV packing), and blankets. Booking online and over the phone was super easy both times.
