How to pack dishes and glasses for moving

Packing dishes and glasses for moving is one of the most frustrating and stressful parts of any move. You need to ensure that each fragile item is carefully secured to avoid damage during transit. If you’re unsure how to pack dishes for moving, Affordable Reliable Moving and Storage has your back! Here is everything you need to know about how to pack dishes and glasses for moving.

Basic materials required for packing

Here are the basic materials you need for packing:

  • Medium-sized packing boxes: When choosing packing boxes, choose the right size. The items should be stored snugly inside to prevent accidental breakage in transit.
  • Bubble pack: Bubble pack is essential for moving fragile items such as dishes and glasses. Wrap large items individually, and stack smaller items together to save on bubble wrap.
  • Packing tape: Use packing tape to secure the bubble wrap around your dishes and glasses and to close the packing boxes.
  • Labels and markers: Make sure to label each box with the contents. This way, you won’t have any trouble unpacking the boxes after transport.

To be as efficient as possible, it would be best to pack dishes and glasses for moving methodically. Below, you will find a step-by-step guide that will get you on the right track.

Prepare markers to label the boxes.

Step 1: Close the bottom of the box with tape

Using packing tape, secure the bottom of the packing box to prevent the box from opening accidentally while in transit. The tape will also reinforce the bottom and prevent it from sagging under the weight of your dishes and glasses. For added security, consider using multiple layers of tape across the seams and edges of the box to ensure it stays intact during the move. According to the local movers Orange County offers, using high-quality packing tape is essential, as cheaper varieties may not provide the strength needed to hold the box together when carrying heavier items. Additionally, cross-taping the bottom by placing strips of tape in a crisscross pattern provides extra durability. It is very important that you take the time to properly secure the bottom. It’s the best way to avoid accidents and ensure your fragile items remain protected throughout the moving process.

Step 2: Pack up plates first and add them to the box

After wrapping your plates in bubble packs, place the plates at the bottom of the box. The flat surface of the plates will provide a stable surface for your other items. Make sure to wrap each plate individually to prevent them from clashing together and causing chips or cracks. The packing services Orange County professionals often recommend standing plates vertically in the box rather than stacking them flat. This reduces the risk of breakage as vertical positioning can better absorb pressure from above. Additionally, consider layering the bottom of the box with a soft material like crumpled paper or foam for extra cushioning before adding the plates. Once the plates are securely in place, fill any gaps around them with packing peanuts or more paper to prevent movement. By following these steps, you create a solid base for the rest of your kitchenware and ensure your plates remain safe during transit.

Step 3: Pack the bowls, pots, and pans and add them to the box

Stack your bowls, pots, and pans on top of the plates, making sure they are properly wrapped in protective materials like bubble packs or packing paper to prevent damage. It’s important to place the heavier pots and pans towards the bottom of the stack, while lighter items like bowls should be packed above. Avoid adding too much weight directly on top of the plates to prevent them from cracking or breaking. If you find that the box is becoming too heavy or overstuffed, consider splitting the load into multiple boxes. Alternatively, if you need temporary storage during your move, there are options such as vaulted storage Orange County companies offer to keep your kitchenware secure. This can be especially helpful if you’re not immediately unpacking. Again, make sure you fill any remaining space with crumpled paper or packing peanuts. That will help avoid shifting, keeping everything in place during transit.

It is better to pack pots and pans separately from the more delicate kitchenware.

Step 4: Pack mugs and glasses and add them to the box

Place your mugs and glasses last, after the plates, bowls, and pots have been securely packed. Wrap each mug and glass individually to prevent scratches or chips. For added protection, consider wrapping a layer of paper inside the cups to shield them from internal pressure. Lay these items on their side, as this helps prevent tipping during the move, reducing the risk of breakage. When placing them in the box, avoid stacking too many layers of glasses and mugs. According to moving experts, it’s best to keep the more fragile glasses on top. If space allows, you can also insert small towels or dishcloths between them for extra padding. Here’s a quick list for packing mugs and glasses:

  1. Wrap each piece individually.
  2. Fill cups with paper for internal protection.
  3. Lay items on their side.
  4. Place dishcloths or paper between each layer for cushioning.

Step 5: Fill the gap with a cushion

After arranging your dishes, mugs, and glasses, you’ll likely notice some gaps in the box, especially around the sides and between items. It’s crucial to fill these gaps with soft, cushioning materials to prevent your dishes from shifting during transit, which can lead to breakage. You can use extra bubble packs, packing paper, or even household items like towels, blankets, or dishcloths. Simply stuff the material into the open spaces until everything is snug and secure. Make sure there is no movement when you gently shake the box. This added padding not only protects the dishes but also ensures that the box retains its shape and doesn’t collapse when stacked with other boxes. Taking the time to fill every gap properly is a key step in safeguarding your kitchenware and ensuring it arrives at your new home in perfect condition.

Add a layer of padding on top

Before sealing the box, add a final layer of protection over your packed items. Use all of the cushioning materials we mentioned in the previous steps. This extra padding helps absorb any pressure or impacts during transit, reducing the risk of damage. It also prevents the items from moving around inside the box if it’s jostled or stacked with other boxes. Professional packers believe this step is essential for safeguarding fragile items, especially in busy moving environments. Ensure the top layer is snug but not overstuffed, allowing the box to close securely while still offering that vital extra protection during the move.

When you pack dishes and glasses for moving, fill the gaps in boxes with soft or cushioning materials.

Step 6: After you pack dishes and glasses for moving, tape the upper side of the box

Once all your dishes and glasses are securely packed, carefully close the box by folding the flaps over each other. Before taping, make sure once more there is no excess space inside the box. This will prevent the items from shifting during transport. After closing the flaps, use high-quality packing tape to secure the top side of the box, ensuring the tape runs along the seam and extends slightly over the edges for added reinforcement. The residential movers Orange County offers have noticed that just one layer of tape is sometimes not enough. Therefore, it’s advisable to apply several layers of tape to guarantee the box remains closed, especially if it’s holding heavy or fragile items. Additionally, label the box as “fragile” and indicate which side should remain upright to help movers handle it with care during the move. Properly taping and labeling will protect your valuables and ensure a smoother moving experience.

Consider hiring professionals for this overwhelming process

If packing fragile items like dishes and glasses feels overwhelming or if you have valuable items you’re worried about damaging, it may be best to hire professional movers. Fragile and high-value belongings, such as heirloom china or expensive glassware, require careful handling. Professional movers have the experience and specialized equipment to ensure they’re packed and transported safely. Many moving companies offer specialized packing services where they provide high-quality packing materials and pack your items using industry-standard techniques. So, in case the process seems too time-consuming or stressful, call dependable movers to save you from the hassle and potential mistakes that could lead to damage. Hiring experts is especially helpful when you’re dealing with a tight schedule or when you want peace of mind knowing your most valuable belongings are in good hands.

Pack your dishes and glasses for moving like a pro!

In conclusion, to pack dishes and glasses for moving, you’ll need a bit of patience and preparation. Essentially, this doesn’t have to be a stressful task when approached methodically. With the right materials, careful attention to detail, and a few extra precautions, you can ensure that your fragile items arrive safely at your new home. The key is preparation: taking the time to wrap, pad, and secure each piece properly will save you the headache of dealing with broken items later. However, if the task feels overwhelming or you’re dealing with valuable or irreplaceable items, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. In any case, your delicate kitchen and dining room items will arrive at their destination unharmed.

This company is the real deal! From the initial contact with Tyler who organized the move and was very communicative and available to answer any questions, to the day of, everything exceeded my expectations. Our crew consisted of Armando, Edwin and John who were all fantastic! They worked so hard solution seeking and navigating our new space (which has a very tight stairwell and is 3 stories) not to mention moving everything out of our old apartment which was also on the 3rd floor (no elevator). They wrapped our furniture and took great care handling all of our boxes and fragile pieces. Seriously, these are some of the hardest working guys I have ever seen and they had a great attitude the whole time! I highly recommend them and will be using them again for my next move. Worth every penny. Thanks again for the 5 star service!

From start to finish, the team lived up to their name—affordable, reliable, and truly professional. They showed up on time, handled everything with care, and made what could’ve been a stressful day feel totally under control. This is our 2nd move with Affordable Reliable Moving, and they are absolutely fantastic. Today, we have Spencer, Luis, and Jesse -- they were ON TIME (a little early, in fact), super fast with the big item packing and moving, genuinely nice, and incredibly efficient. They provide wardrobe boxes, mattress covers, furniture packing, electronics (TV packing), and blankets. Booking online and over the phone was super easy both times. Highly, highly recommend this company for anyone moving in SoCal!
